Do you remember, back in the 80s, when formula milk companies promoted their products to mothers in developing countries as ‘better’ than breastfeeding, despite these mothers not having access to sterilised bottles or clean water? I wonder how many deaths they were responsible for?
Did you know Nestlé and Danone are still doing it?
Save the Children has an online petition to get these multinational companies to stop manipulating the poor into making bad choices, often with deadly consequences.
Breastmilk contains antibodies which fight off infection. If every child was breastfed within an hour of birth, 830,000 lives would be saved every year. You can read more, and sign the petition, by clicking here. The link will open in a new tab.
In the meantime, I’m going to avoid buying any product from these people. When money is more important than a child’s life, something is terribly wrong.
You don’t have to be a believer to be appalled at the marketing tactics of these companies. Their manipulative behaviour is typical of that used by abusive people. As a wise man once said ‘the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil’.
