While Pope Francis has called for a day of prayer and fasting tomorrow, 7th September, the campaign group Avaaz has created a petition to plead the US and Iranian presidents to seek a peaceful solution to the crisis. The petition is worded as follows:
‘To US President Obama and President Rouhani of Iran:
As citizens around the world horrified by the slaughter of innocents in Syria, we call on you to put aside your differences and meet to find a diplomatic path forward that brings all parties to the table to negotiate a ceasefire and peace. You are in a unique position to help broker such a solution. There must be a bold diplomatic breakthrough. We are calling on you to create one and start saving lives.’
I urge you to sign the petition. Who can forget the photographs of children, lying in rows as if sleeping peacefully… until you realise they are not sleeping. You ask ‘why?’ but there is no ‘why?’ It is just senseless.
Click here to sign the petition, it will open in a new tab.
As Followers of Christ, we must not put God last. I am not Catholic, but I will join Pope Francis in his call for prayer and fasting. We must stand together.
The world is too big for me to save. Christ already did that. But we must never underestimate the power of prayer.
“Jesus asked the father, ‘How long has this been happening to him?’
And he said, ‘From childhood… if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.’
Jesus said to him, ‘If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.’
Immediately the father of the child cried out, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’
…Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he was able to stand.
When he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’
He said to them, ‘This kind can come out only through prayer.’”
