Shirley Temple and Bill Robinson broke some racial barriers while upholding others

Shirley Temple, who died on 10th February, was adorable as a child actress, and later made her name as an ambassador for the US government. It has to be said that her childhood performances were enchanting, but some of the films are uncomfortable viewing – especially those depicting her as ‘mistress’ to various ‘slaves’ – to 21st century eyes.
